Switch in my office

My office located in trivandrum is located in two floors. It the administrative area on the first floor and technical section on the second floor. PC in both the floors are connected via a switch. This switch routes the data from one pc to another. Today morning our network administrator found some issues with the switch and switch has gone out of order and for one hour we had not internet connection. At that time i realized that the value of internet connection in our lives. Without internet our life has gone miserable.
After resuming the internet connection i have searched over the net on different type of swithes available. As i am not a tech geek i am not sure on what type of switches are available and where it is being used. I found an interesting type of switch known as HDMI switches , which is used to route high definition video to an output. I have gone through this website and found new type of networking devices from this website. Anyway it was an interesting read on switches.
