Wishing Happy Onam - 2008
Wishing a happy and prosperous onam for all readers and keralites around the world. Today is uthadam or the first onam and tomorrow is thiruonam (second onam). Second onam or thiruonam is widely celebrated by keralites. In all parts of kerala people will be preparing pookalams or flower mats in front of their houses to welcome onam and the king mahabali. Now a days people are not making pookalams infront of their houses but creating beside the roads by some group of people. Anyway it is great that people are preparing it and upholding this age old tradition.
For the coming 4 days or the 4 onam kerala will be colorful, vibrant and illuminated than any other days in the year and all the people will be in an enthusiastic mood. People will be enjoying in their own way with friends and families as this happens only once in a year.
Today people will be running around to buy things for the preparation of the unique feast for the thiruonam day. This hanging around of people in the market to buy things is commonly called “uthrada pachil” in kerala. Today i have bought the things for the preparation of feast for the thiruonam day.
Yesterday in kerala government’s onam celebration has been officially inagurated in nishaghandhi open auditorium, kanaka kunnu, trivandrum. The officially sposnsored onam celebration will be there in all major cities of kerala for another 5 days. Every evening there will be cultural and other types of programs will be organised in different venues in trivandrum. Most of the offices and education institutions will be having holidays for atleast 3 days in kerala. So there will be lots of audience for these kind of cultural programs organised by kerala governement. Officially these celebrations are called tourism week celebrations. National and International visitors will be coming to kerala during onam time to watch and experience this unique festival.

Kerala Hartal and Fuel Price Hike
Today it is hartal organized both by LDF and BJP in kerala. Hartal is being organized to protest against fuel price hike by central government. Yesterday central government has hiked 5 rupees for petrol, 2 rupees for diesel and 50 rupees for LPG. This price is expected for the past two weeks.
I think this price hike will be a big blow to common man’s life. As kerala is a consumer state keralites will be most affected as most of the essential commodities are coming from outside the state. In accordance with the fuel price hike the price of essential commodities and commodities which are coming from other states will also increase. This fuel price hike is a sign of more miserable days in the list for the common man. It is a fact that which ever party is organizing the hartal common man’s issues will not be solved.
In this recent past there was an exorbitant increase in the price of essential commodities in the state. This fuel price hike has added more problems for the layman.
I am asking is this the only option left with central government to take control of the debts accumulating with petroleum companies. According to economic experts there are some other ways to avoid this price hike. But i am not sure and dont know much about those thoughts by the experts. I think our prime minister, who is an eminent economist and our finance minister is help less in solving country’s financial crisis.
It is true that hartal will badly affect business in kerala and common man’s life but it is unavoidable in these type of situations. Anyway i am wishing you a happy hartal for you in kerala. Enjoy this unexpected hartal.
