Today kearla has witnessed a hartal called by the left government in kerala for banning the killer pesticide endosulfan in India. I think that after several years a political part has called for a hartal which is based on a social cause. I am not sure whether political parties in kerala has raised this issue of endosulfan victim for their personal gains.

Anyway today’s hartal has ended up in jubilant mood that the Stockholm convention has agreed upon banning endosulfan and the government of India has agreed upon the same. The convention has agreed upon a global ban on Endosulfan which had caused more than 500 deaths and made more than 4,000 people handicapped in Kasargod. In the Stockholm convention, during the initial meetings some countries were in favor of endosulfan later on they have changed their mind and stood against endosulfan. This caused the India government to come up with the decision to ban endosulfan.

When i heard the news in many channels i came to know that some exemptions are given for India government with regard to the ban of endosulfan that means endosulfan will be still there and the government of India will not be banning the killer pesticide in the future. As per the exemptions this killer pesticide can still be sprayed on some selected crops and agricultural plants across India. This means that endosulfan can be freely produced in India and can be used any where in India. I would say that the government should take measures to completely stop the production of endosulfan otherwise there will be more victims of this killer pesticide in the future also.

According to some farmers endosulfan is the best pesticide they can use against those pests which feed on their crops all other pesticides may become ineffective as the years pass by and they can’t find a better alternative pesticide other than endosulfan. One litre of endosufan costs around 260 rs in India while the best alternative which is used by farmers in developed countries costs around 2000 – 3000 rs which is not quite affordable for the India farmers. Farmers are ready to use other alternative pesticides if they gets the same effect of endosulfan but unfortunately there is no immediate alternative to suggest for farmers in India. I think that the biological scientists in India have to come up with a better alternative for endosulan otherwise the farmers in India will not be able to get better earnings from their crops and there will be more endosulfan victims in future generations.

Now a new question is relevant “When will india completely ban endosulfan?’

I support complete ban on the killer endosulfan.
